In the turbulent waters of the Caribbean, the fight against narcotrafficking has taken on an international dimension, mobilizing the French Armed Forces in the Antilles (FAA) alongside their U.S. partners. Part of a permanent cooperation program between the European Union and the United States, Operation Narcops reflects the commitment to establish coordinating efforts in order to curb the flow of narcotics to Europe.
Joint operations yielding concrete results
The collaboration between the FAA and U.S. forces has led to strategic interventions in the high seas. In August 2024, the surveillance frigate Ventôse seized 10.5 tons of cocaine from a Brazilian fishing vessel off the coast of Martinique, underscoring the effectiveness of intelligence and naval interception capabilities.
Based in Fort-de-France, the Ventôse plays a key role in this fight. Since the early 2000s, it has intercepted more than 50 drug-laden vessels. In 2023, its interventions resulted in the seizure of 4.4 tons of cocaine, a figure that rose to 5.1 tons in 2024. Alongside the Germinal, the FAA’s other surveillance frigate, these three-week missions, conducted two to three times a year, ensure continuous monitoring of drug trafficking routes.
A persistent and adaptive threat
Drug traffickers employ sophisticated strategies, including the use of “motherships”— heavily loaded fishing vessels that operate in the open sea to supply go-fast boats — that then transport the narcotics to Europe and North America.
Cooperation with U.S. agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), provides advanced surveillance capabilities through cutting-edge maritime detection technologies and timely intelligence sharing.
An international response to a global challenge
The Narcops program highlights the importance of transatlantic alliances in securing maritime trade routes. The FAA’s involvement alongside the United States demonstrates the effectiveness of joint action in tackling organized crime threats.
While France plays a crucial role by deploying military and intelligence assets, it is ultimately the synergy between Caribbean and U.S. forces that ensures an effective fight against drug trafficking. This increasingly structured cooperation remains key to a sustained commitment against the scourge of narcotics trafficking in the Caribbean Sea.
