An Ecuadorean naval frigate will participate in the Unitas naval maneuvers in
Peru, along with units from the United States, Colombia, Mexico, and Chile, the
Ecuadorean Navy indicated Thursday.

The navy indicated that the the frigate ‘Presidente Eloy Alfaro’ will take
part in the exercise, which will begin on 13 July, as part of the annual
operational-activities plan.

The vessel will depart Saturday from the Guayaquil base (in southwestern
Ecuador).

In 2007 the U.S. Southern Command stripped from Ecuador the right to host the
Unitas maneuvers, which are carried out under the auspices of the Inter-American
Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR).
