The armed forces of Argentina and the United States are finalizing preparations for Atlantic Dagger 2026, a landmark special operations exercise that signals a new era in bilateral defense cooperation. Scheduled for late April, this joint training will unfold across various locations in Argentina. According to the Argentine Armed Forces Joint Chiefs of Staff, the exercise will bring together elite special operations units from both nations, with the primary goal of enhancing interoperability and cementing strategic cooperation.
Atlantic Dagger is a high-profile exercise characterized by the deployment of elite personnel and cutting-edge technological assets, including the U.S. Air Force’s fifth-generation AC-130J Ghostrider gunships. This marks the first time an aircraft of this class will operate in Argentina — a move considered a significant milestone by defense journal Zona Militar, and a clear indicator of the depth of current defense ties.

Phases of the exercise and training zones
A spokesperson for the Argentine Joint Chiefs of Staff informed Diálogo that the exercise will be executed in three distinct phases: The first, Force Integration, will focus on foundational activities, including specialized medical training and live-fire drills. The second phase, Joint Mission Planning, will consist of a collaborative review and synchronization of operation strategies. While the third and final phase involves the actual execution.
Organized by Argentina’s Joint Special Operations Command and U.S. Southern Command’s (SOUTHCOM) Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH), the core activities will be centered in Córdoba province. Maneuvers will include high-altitude parachute infiltrations, nighttime helicopter operations, precision marksmanship, and close-quarters combat techniques, Argentine military news site DEF reported.
Argentina’s Minister of Defense Lieutenant General Carlos Presti highlighted the unprecedented level of interaction between Argentine commandos, tactical divers, and U.S. air, sea, and land special forces. “In this training, Argentina interacts with the most highly trained military force in the world,” Minister Presti told the press.
The U.S. contingent — recognized as the global gold standard in special operations — will contribute their expertise in counterterrorism, hostage rescue, and unconventional warfare. Concurrently, Argentine troops will focus on consolidating their ability to adapt and operate seamlessly alongside international partners, Zona Militar noted. The Argentine Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that most of the U.S. participants belong to the Army Special Forces (Green Berets) and the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).
A legacy of cooperation
Atlantic Dagger 2026 is the culmination of a series of joint training exercises conducted over the past year. In November 2025, during exercise Trident, Argentine and U.S. special forces operated together at the Mar del Plata Naval Base to shared expertise and conduct maneuvers aimed at reinforcing the security of maritime spaces, Gaceta Marinera reported.
In addition, Argentine elite units have maintained a high tempo of international engagements. For instance, in September 2025, the Argentine Armed Forces Joint Special Operations Troop Patrol participated in Fuerzas Comando in El Salvador. This annual SOCSOUTH-sponsored international competition evaluates skills such as physical endurance, tactical coordination, and teamwork, and serves as a critical pillar in standardize procedures among partner forces.
The strategic roadmap for binational engagements was formalized in March 2025, during the Special Operations Forces (SOF) Talks in Buenos Aires. This summit resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding between Argentina’s Joint Special Operations Command and SOCSOUTH, establishing a long-term vision for expert exchanges and the high-level integration now being seen in Atlantic Dagger.
A strategic link for regional defense
Beyond operational readiness, Atlantic Dagger 2026 is a key component of Argentina’s broader international repositioning. According to news site Escenario Mundial, strengthening defense ties with the United States is part of a concerted effort to project predictability, bolster hemispheric security, and reaffirm Argentina’s commitment to shared democratic values and the rule of law.
The Argentine Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized that the exercise is built on a foundation of transparency and mutual trust. “This type of exercise seeks to increase technical knowledge, skills, and mutual learning, while evaluating the limits of our own capabilities in joint and combined tasks,” the official spokesperson said.
Military collaboration through exercises like Atlantic Dagger not only sharpens the readiness of the respective armed forces but also fortifies regional stability through the exchange of knowledge and shared operational practices. This joint training stands as a decisive step toward deeper interoperability and a more secure, integrated hemisphere.
