For seven months, 27 Brazilian Air Force infantry personnel have been training to join the 15th Brazilian Contingent in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). This is the second squad sent on a mission of this kind abroad. The first one left at the beginning of the year.
The group will replace the military personnel of the Special Air Force Infantry Battalion of Recife, the first Air Force squad to join a United Nations peace force.
The members of the Peace Force Squad of the Special Air Force Infantry Battalion of Manaus received on 29 July the United Nations badge at a farewell ceremony held at Manaus Air Base.
The troops embarked on 2 August for Port-au-Prince, where they will join the 15th Brazilian Contingent in MINUSTAH. “We are going to get to know another people, another culture, and have great experiences,” affirmed Infantry Lt. Renan Antunes, the squad commander.
“I believe that I have in front of me troops who are prepared for the mission in its physical, technical and psychological aspects, fully ready to represent the Brazilian nation on the international stage,” said Air Force Lt. Gen. Nilson Soilet Carminati, commander of the 7th Regional Air Command.
In Port-au-Prince, the squad will be responsible for maintaining stability and security in the Delmas area, the location of 64 camps sheltering the population displaced after the earthquake.
