“Members of an ELN structure demobilized this morning in Valle del Cauca (west); 30 ELN members surrendered with their weapons, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos stated.
The president added that this is the largest demobilization in the history of this guerrilla group, and that it constitutes “a huge step towards peace.”
According to the government, the insurgents that surrendered were part of ELN’s “Lucho Quintero Giraldo” company, and they will now be able to reintegrate into civilian life.
The Ministry of Defense stated that demobilized ELN members surrendered a machine gun, a grenade launcher, rifles, hand grenades, ammunition and communications equipment.
