Colombian authorities have arrested 14 members of a criminal gang wanted in the United States on drug trafficking charges, the police said.

Those arrested were part of a network led by Daniel Barrera, also known as “El Loco” (Madman), that processed and exported massive amounts of cocaine, and laundered money through emerald mining and real estate.

The group used small airplanes to fly nearly 1.5 tons of cocaine a week out of the country, moving it through air strips in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Honduras, all transit points on a route leading to the United States and Europe.

The gang also shipped drugs out of the Colombian ports of Barranquilla and Cartagena on the Caribbean, police said.
