During the celebration for the 189th anniversary of Costa Rican independence, President Laura Chinchilla called for unity to combat violence, crime and drug trafficking on September 15.

During the celebration, held in the capital city’s National Park, Chinchilla said it is urgent to tackle these increasing problems in a variety of ways, reported Xinhua.

Costa Rica’s first female president added that public safety and drug trafficking are the government’s top priorities, and vowed the government would not only fight crime, but also focus on preventing it through social programs.

“Inequality and poverty are breeding the violence,” she said, according to the same report.

Later, President Chinchilla acknowledged to the press that more people have died today than in all of the political conflicts of generations past.
