Brazilian Navy Athlete Wins Unprecedented Gold at London Olympics
By Dialogo August 02, 2012
The Brazilian Navy proudly congratulates judoka Sarah Menezes, who just made history on the afternoon of July 28, at the London Olympic Games. The athlete, who joined the Navy in 2009 with the rank of seaman, defeated Romanian Alina Dumitru, an Olympic champion in Beijing 2008, and won the gold medal in judo in the lightweight category (up to 48 kg). This is the first victory by a female athlete in this sport in the country’s history. Sarah Menezes’s gold is the first for Brazilian judo since the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
The victory has confirmed that the partnership established between the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Sports, which resulted in the creation of the Program for the Incorporation of High-Performance Athletes into the Armed Forces since 2008, has strengthened not only the military sports teams for the 5th Military World Games, held in Rio in 2011, but also Brazilian athletic preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The effort has yielded results since the first day of competition at the Olympic Games, bringing the hope of new medals for Brazil.
The Brazilian Navy remains firm in its goal of supporting the Brazilian Olympic project and athletes’ preparation for the 6th Military World Games, to be held in 2015 in South Korea. The Navy will continue to make its professionals and its Brazilian Olympic Committee-accredited facilities available to its military athletes and to Brazilian athletics in general as training centers for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, so that we can join in helping to position our country as one of the world’s leading athletic powers.
!!!Congratulations to Corporal Menezes, a singular recognition for herself and for the Navy of the Southern Cone giant, Brazil. It has a huge significance for the history of the games and the record of those who achieved such a feat; an experience that had not been repeated since Barcelona 1992 !!!
