U.S. marines with Joint Task Force-Leeward Islands unload the parts for a Lightweight Water Purification System from a box truck at a water purification site on Saint Martin, on September 14th. The system allows the marines to purify approximately 1,800 gallons of water a day in order to supply communities on the island affected by Hurricane Irma. At the request of partner nations, JTF-LI deployed aircraft and service members to areas in the eastern Caribbean Sea affected by Hurricane Irma. The task force is a U.S. military unit composed of marines, soldiers, sailors, and airmen, and represents U.S. Southern Command’s primary response to Hurricane Irma.
