Founded in 1984, the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz, in King George Island, Antarctica, suffered a large-scale fire in 2012. In the tragedy, two military personnel died and 70 percent of the facilities were lost. The Brazilian government has invested some $100 million in its reconstruction, and the new station (pictured) has received state of the art equipment. (Photo: Peter Illicciev/Fioantar/Fiocruz)
