An individual responsible for transporting drugs from Central America to Mexico for the cartel led by Mexican drug boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was detained in the southern part of the Mexican capital, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) announced.
The Mexican José Carlos Moreno Flores, alias “La Calentura” (“The Fever”), who according to Sedena was working with Guzmán’s organization in the state of Guerrero (in southern Mexico), is suspected of maintaining contacts with “Costa Rican and Guatemalan drug traffickers for the transport of alkaloids” to that Mexican region, the agency indicated.
From Guerrero, on the Pacific coast, Moreno Flores sent the drugs to “the United States, using various routes and means of transportation,” the defense secretariat added.
“El Chapo” Guzmán, a fugitive since 2001 and head of the Sinaloa cartel, is considered the most powerful Mexican drug trafficker by the U.S. magazine Forbes.
Moreno Flores was also “one of those chiefly responsible for the violence generated in Chilpancingo (the capital of Guerrero, 300 km from Mexico City), where he was waging a battle for control of the drug trade with an enemy group known as ‘Los Rojos’ (‘The Reds’),” the Sedena statement indicated.
Guerrero, which includes the port of Acapulco, is one of the battlefields in the wars between drug traffickers and anti-cartel agents that have left more than 41,000 dead since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderón orchestrated a national anti-drug strategy with the participation of 50,000 military personnel.
