Argentina’s and Chile’s Joint Staffs are carrying out the combined exercise “Southern Cross I” from November 5 – 9 in the city of Bahía Blanca, Argentina.
As part of the exercise there will be simulations of activities carried out by the Peace Force, including: civil riots, food delivery to the population, assistance to wounded people, negotiation, and management in road control points, among others.
The goal is to test the joint combined operational capacity in the potential deployment of a peace operation and to improve information exchange capacities between both countries and other entities.
The Chilean force consists of an Army SA 330 L “Puma” helicopter and Marine Corps personnel from the Navy, as well as members from the Chilean Joint Staff and delegates from the three branches of the country’s Armed Forces.
The exercise will end on November 9, with a demonstration in which the Defense Ministers and Chiefs of the Joint Staff from both countries will be present.
Officers from the Brazilian Armed Forces’ Joint Staff will also attend the military exercise as observers as an initial step to establish the possible inclusion of Brazil as member of the peace force.
