Underneath the salt flats are the world’s largest reserves of lithium — a key mineral used in medicine and especially in rechargeable batteries used in items such as cell phones, laptops and electric cars. Bolivia has half the world’s known reserves of lithium, and officials estimate the reserves hold 100 million tons of lithium, reported news agency AFP.
