In an interview with Diálogo a year ago, the president of Brazil’s Military Sports Commission, Vice-Admiral José Bernardo Pierantoni Gamboa, said that he believed that investment in elite athletes was worth it. He predicted that the level of competition would gain public recognition and was optimistic about the performance of Brazil. “Our goal is to place in the top three in the medals table,” he said at the time. With a few competitions to left before the Militaty Games comes to a close 5 th Military World Games, Diálogo talked with the Vice Admiral again to see whether he had changed his mind and gotten a better perspective of the event.

The 5th Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro ended with great numbers, both in the events and in their organization. According to organizers, 4174 military athletes from 110 countries competed in the event, which also featured 281 referees from around the world. All who competed hoped to win at least one of the disputed 1421 medals: 459 gold, 459 silver, and 503 bronze (the combat sports award two bronze medals per category).
