The U.S. government’s response to the Honduran people in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Sara took shape on November 20 with helicopters from Joint Task Force Bravo, located at Soto Cano Air Base, assisting in transporting Honduran medical personnel and supplies to the communities most affected by the storm. This is just one example of the continued commitment the United States has shown to the Honduran people. Since the onset of the storm, the U.S. government has committed donations totaling $10 million.
Through USAID Honduras, $464,000 was allocated to purchase food and cleaning and hygiene kits for 900 families affected by the storm. This assistance was carried out in collaboration with the Secretariat for Risk and Contingency Management (COPECO) and the World Food Program (WFP). U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) will donate more than $248,000 in disaster preparedness and response supplies to the Secretariat for Risk and Contingency Management (COPECO). This donation will replenish COPECO’s warehouse following its response to Tropical Storm Sara and strengthen its capacity to deal with future emergencies.
The U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Security Cooperation (SCO) committed $9 million for the training and procurement of humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HA/DR) equipment to enhance the Honduran Armed Forces’ ability to respond effectively to natural disasters.
The U.S. support reflects the unwavering commitment to the Honduran people, contributing to their recovery and reconstruction process, while strengthening the capacity to face and overcome the challenges of natural disasters.
