The U.S. Military provided 15 new Night Vision Goggles and related accessories to the Uruguayan Air Force.

The devices – delivered by the Office of Defense Cooperation in Montevideo – were funded through the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) to enhance the Uruguayan Air Force’s night mission capabilities in support of United Nations forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

GPOI was established in 2004 to address major capability gaps in international peace support operations and aims to build and maintain capability, capacity, and effectiveness of peace operations.

With 2,200 troops and observers deployed, Uruguay is the world’s largest per capita contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations and the seventh largest contributor globally, according to UN statistics.

The Uruguayan Air Force is currently the only international force conducting night flight missions in the Congo. The unit is assigned Search and Rescue missions, among other responsibilities.
