Mexico arrests Jalisco drug cartel chief

MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities captured the leader of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel in Guadalajara, along with a top lieutenant, authorities announced on Mar. 9.
Military officials identified the man as Erick Valencia Salazar, alias “El 85.” His second-in-command was identified by Mexican media as Otoniel Mendoza, alias “Tony Montana.”
Officials said they also seized more than 30 rifles, grenades, magazines and cartridges of different calibers.
After the detention was made public, alleged Jalisco New Generation cartel members went on a rampage throughout Guadalajara, killing four people, blocking 16 streets and burning 25 vehicles.
The Jalisco New Generation is one of the emerging smaller cartels in Mexico.
