Maritime Counter Drug Summit Being Held in Peru
By Dialogo September 20, 2012A summit for regional maritime coordination against drug trafficking is being held since September 18 in Lima, with the support of the U.S. Coast Guard, stated the American Embassy in Lima.
This is the first time that the 12th Multilateral Maritime Counter Drug Summit takes place in Peru. The event gathers 75 representatives from naval and coast guard forces, as well as personnel from other agencies from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Chile, and the United States.
‘‘Maritime drug trafficking entails a unique legal challenge for regional governments,’‘ expressed a statement from the U.S. Embassy.
This two-day summit offers ‘‘a forum for its participants to share information and practices about how to improve strategies to effectively combat drug trafficking as well as transnational crime in open waters. It also contributes to promoting regional cooperation in these efforts,’‘ the Embassy stated.
