Haiti’s debt to lenders such as the International Monetary Fund has been forgiven, in an attempt to help the country rebuild after the severe earthquake it suffered in January, the U.S. Treasury Department said Friday.

“The United States, the International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and other donors have together reached the goal of eliminating the total debt stock that Haiti owed to the IFIs at the time of the January earthquake,” the Treasury Department explained in a statement.
