Going to the World Cup
By Dialogo January 01, 2010Eight of the 32 teams participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup come from the Americas, which is home to some of the best players in the world, such as Brazil’s Kaká, Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Uruguay’s Diego Forlán. The International Federation of Association Football event, dating back to 1930, is played every four years. Five-time champion Brazil (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), the only country to participate in all 18 World Cups, is one of the favorites to win the title yet again. Southern Cone countries will also be participating: twotime champions Argentina (1978, 1986), which had a difficult time qualifying despite being coached by all-time great Diego Maradona, and Uruguay (1930, 1950), which won a homeand- away playoff against Costa Rica, qualified along with Chile and Paraguay.
