Peruvian Army and Marine forces combat narcotrafficking and narcoterrorism elements of the Shining Path in the Apurímac and Ene Rivers Valley, during one of the many operations being conducted in 2011. The remote region has various geographic challenges such as dense jungles, Andean highlands and merging rivers. The region, known as VRAE for its Spanish acronym, is an area where the terrorist organization Shining Path has re-emerged after near-eradication in 1999.
