A call to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) “to lay down arms and join the political process” was issued in Brussels by the chief diplomat of the European Union (EU), Catherine Ashton.

Ashton was in Washington on November 27 participating in meetings between the European Union and the U.S. Government, and following her return to Europe, she referred to what she characterized as the “brutal murder” by the FARC of four individuals kidnapped by the group and demanded the “immediate and unconditional liberation of all hostages still in captivity.”

“I call on the FARC to lay down arms and join the political process of reform and modernisation of Colombia,” Ashton said in a statement, in which she affirmed that “Colombia can count upon the EU’s support.”

“I (…) express my deepest sympathy and solidarity with the families of the victims, and the Colombian government and people,” the chief European diplomat, Catherine Ashton, said.
