The Brazilian Police arrested an activist of the Basque separatist organization ETA, in Rio de Janeiro on January 18. Joseba Gotzon Visan González had been a fugitive since 1991, the Spanish Ministry of Interior reported.

Visan González had escaped after the Vizcaya Command, responsible for several ETA attacks, was dismantled in 1991, the Ministry added in a statement.

This capture was made after a European arrest warrant was issued by the National Court, the Spanish court in charge of terrorism cases.

On October 20, 2011, a severely weakened ETA announced that they were leaving the armed struggle behind, but that they refused to dissolve and disarm, as requested by the French and Spanish governments.

ETA, whose last attack was dated August 2009, is responsible for the killing of 829 people in 40 years of armed struggle for the Basque Country’s independence.
