Defense Ministers from the Americas gather in Perú to develop security strategies

Defense ministers from 34 countries in the Americas are gathering in Perú to discuss the best ways to protect public safety and promote cooperation among security forces in the Western Hemisphere. They’ll meet at the Eleventh Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas from October 12-14.
“In today’s international environment, the importance of this conference rests on reaffirming the Americas as a peaceful place; the American continent, today, is a sanctuary of peace and cooperation among the countries,” said Librado Orozco, director general of international relations at the Peruvian Ministry of Defense and executive secretary of the conference.
The defense ministers at the conference will discuss the best ways to meet the challenges their countries face – which include international drug smuggling, terrorism, climate change, illegal mining and logging, civilian assistance during natural disasters, health care provision, and human trafficking.

A ‘coordinated response’ to non-traditional threats

“This forum came to be when democracy and the rule of law were being reborn or reaffirmed,” Orozco said. “At this juncture, the continent is facing threats that go beyond traditional ones. These new threats require that we present a coordinated response as part of a new system for security across the continent.”
The first Conference of Defense Ministers was held in 1995 in Williamsburg, Virginia, in the United States. Since then, it has been held every two years at a different site.
“It is not often that so many defense ministers can come together to discuss these shared topics, so this is a forum we must use to full advantage to work together, above all on subjects such as the new threats to our security,” said Andrés Gómez de la Torre, an international defense affairs specialist and the former director of Perú’s National Intelligence School.
“In our region, the Andean countries have several threats in common, and this forum will help us coordinate a strategy to confront them. The same thing can happen for North American and Central American countries.”

Conference will be held in the ‘White City’

This is the first time the conference will be held in Perú; participants will meet in the city of Arequipa, south of Lima. The city will host official delegations from 34 participating countries, as well as the ministers of defense from Spain – Pedro Morenés Eulate – and Portugal – José Pedro Aguiar-Branco. The two European defense ministers will participate as observers.
Arequipa is known as the “White City” because many of its buildings were constructed with sillar – white volcanic stone. The city is home to several volcanic cones, such as “El Misti” and “Pichu Pichu.” It is the second-largest city in Peru, with a population of about 852,000 residents.
“I appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping the event achieve the recognition it deserves. Arequipa has qualities that make it ideal as a regular center for international events,” said Peruvian Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano.
The conference will be divided into several sections. All participants will be invited to a general assembly, which will be followed by separate sessions on specific security issues. These sessions will be led by working committees.
The next conference is scheduled to be held in Trinidad and Tobago, a site that conference participants are expected to ratify in Arequipa.
dialogues that build peace The world should not work based on war weapons. Peace is much better because a lot of money is invested in weapons while thousands of families die of hunger. With the money they spend renewing war fleets why not better build schools universities and hospitals and invest in the education of the students... DEFENSE NEEDS TO BE SMART DURING THESE MODERN TIMES, SO WE SHOULD REVIEW WHO IT IS WE ARE DEFENDING. HUMAN BEINGS WHO ARE MOVING STEADILY TOWARD HUMANIZATION OR DEHUMANIZATION. TAKING MAN'S EVOLUTION INTO ACCOUNT, NOW WE'LL GO ON OR WE'RE IN A PERIOD OF INVOLUTION. BECAUSE WE CAN SEE THAT THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IS COMING TO A PEAK OF DEGENERATING HUMANITY THROUGH ITS HUNGER AND LACK, IN OTHER WORDS, IT IS SYSTEMATICALLY DESTROYING HUMAN HEALTH. THE INDUSTRIALIZED FOOD EATEN ALL OVER THE WORLD, MAINLY SUGAR, FLOUR, OIL, SODAS AND ALL THEIR DERIVATIVE... IS THE SCIENTIFIC WORK ON SUGAR OF MAX BRUKER AND APLETTON OR JOSUE DE CASTRO, INNOCENTLY OR COINCIDENTALLY, FOUND HIDDEN AND FULL OF DUST? TO MENTION THE MANY THAT ARE NOT ON THE SHELVES OF THE BOOKSTORES OR ON THE INTERNET TO WEIGH IN ON THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK, AND INVITE OTHERS TO READ OR NOT PAY ANY ATTENTION TO IT.
OUR MINISTERS OF DEFENSE, NOT KNOWING WHOM TO DEFEND, MAYBE THEY'RE SIMPLY PLANNING TO DEFEND THE HUMANITY OF THE CONTINENT, MOST OF WHOM ARE ILL FROM CONSUMING JUNK FOOD.
BEFORE ALL, I HUMBLY SUGGEST, TO COME UP WITH A POLICY OF GOOD HUMAN NUTRITION TO SAVE HUMAN HEALTH, WHICH WOULD GIVE US A WISE SOLUTION TO OUR PROBLEMS IN THE AMERICAS IN THE MOST CONSCIOUS WAY, WITHOUT FIGHTING AMONG OURSELVES.
