Costa Rica and Guatemala to Strengthen Police Cooperation

Guatemalan President Otto Pérez, and Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, announced on September 13 their agreement to integrate a bilateral working group to strengthen cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.

President Pérez made a brief visit to his Costa Rican counterpart to discuss a bilateral agenda that focused cultural and security issues.

According to Chinchilla, the group will work to design measures “for the exchange of information and the strengthening of police cooperation” between both countries.

Such cooperation, she added, will provide for the success of joint operations and the development of training programs for the mutual advancement in combating organized crime.

“Criminal networks are connected, we are sending them the message that we are also ready to be connected to one another” in order to fight, the Costa Rican president indicated.

For his part, Pérez said that security “is a common theme for Central America” and that his country is willing to establish the necessary coordination to jointly confront drug trafficking and other criminal threats.

Another issue discussed at the meeting referenced the possibility of Guatemala advising Costa Rica regarding the protection of archaeological heritage, a “concept in which our country is still in its infancy,” indicated President Chinchilla.

The president said that, in particular, Costa Rica wants to propose to the United Nations to declare the Park of the Spheres (pre-Colombian), recently opened in the Osa Peninsula in the country’s South Pacific, as a “world heritage”.

For this, she explained, the country has to demonstrate “a capacity to manage” the archaeological site, something that Guatemala has enormous experience in.

Meanwhile, Pérez said he sent an invitation to Chinchilla to visit Guatemala this December, during Oxlajuj B’aqtun, an occasion which signifies the end of an era; 5,125 years according to the Mayan cosmogony.
