Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo addressed a contingent of 111 military personnel at Silvio Pettirossi Airport who were headed to Port-au-Prince to carry out a humanitarian mission in Haiti, government sources announced.
“You will now join the service of humanity,” the head of state said in a speech to the troops, who subsequently departed for the Caribbean island.
Lugo called on the soldiers to see that their actions “are always aimed at consolidating peaceful coexistence among the Haitian people.”
The Paraguayan people “have always been characterized by a spirit of solidarity, a high value placed on peace, and harmonious coexistence among peoples,” he said, stressing the soldiers’ mission.
A group of 19 military personnel is already in Haiti, making the contingent 130 personnel strong. They will replace those who have been on the island since last year, the Office of the President announced on its website.
