In an operation targeting the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the “Los Comba” criminal gang, Colombian police arrested 24 individuals and seized weapons and armored vehicles, according to a press release issued by the South American country’s Defense Ministry.
In the announcement, published on the ministry’s website, the director of the National Police, General Oscar Naranjo, said that as a result of 30 searches in five cities, the Criminal Investigation and Interpol Directorate (DIJIN) arrested Róbinson Díaz Rodríguez, alias “El Gordo” [The Fat One], one of the leading members of the criminal gang known as “Los Comba.”
Operation Uranus, which began early in the morning on January 26, was carried out in the cities of Bogotá, Popayán, Pasto, Medellín, and Cali. In Cali, the police discovered ten pistols, two MP4 rifles, two MP5 and Mini Uzi submachine guns, one revolver, and three armored vehicles, at a center used by the group to plan murders for hire.
According to the statement, the gang had an alliance with the ELN to “ensure the supply of raw materials, the protection of laboratories, the production of alkaloids, and the export of those alkaloids.” Los Comba, the statement specified, exported between 800 and 1,000 kilos of cocaine hydrochloride a month.
