BOGOTÁ, Colombia – Carlos Mario Agudelo Giraldo, who allegedly is a member of a heroin-trafficking network, has been apprehended outside the nation’s capital, Colombian counter-narcotics officials said.
The arrest of Agudelo Giraldo, who has been linked to the Los Rastrojos gang, culminated a two-year investigation in which Colombia’s National Police, Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) worked together, said Col. Eduardo Cárdenas Vélez, the National Police’s deputy drug enforcement unit chief.
Agudelo Giraldo, 35, is wanted for extradition by the United States, the destination of the about 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds) of cocaine he allegedly trafficked. He’s also accused of laundering US$20 million.
Agudelo became involved in narco-trafficking in 2001 and “was a member of a transnational network that smuggled heroin into the United States,” Cárdenas Vélez said.
