Brazil has donated seven hundred bottles of antiretrovirals to Ecuador for the treatment of individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes AIDS), the Ecuadorean foreign ministry announced.
The medicine was delivered by the Brazilian ambassador in Quito, Fernando Simas, to representatives of the Ecuadorean Health Ministry and Ministry of Foreign Relations, the ministry indicated in a statement.
The foreign ministry’s deputy secretary for Latin America, José Borja, said that the donation is a sign of the excellent relations between the two countries.
“As members of UNASUR (the Union of South American Nations), we’ve worked jointly to engage in development on a variety of issues. Their support is very important for us,” the diplomat emphasized.
The Ecuadorean government provides treatment to 6,565 individuals infected with HIV and aims to extend coverage to 9,000 people by the end of 2011.
The first AIDS cases were detected in Ecuador in 1984, and around 16,000 patients were recorded as of 2009.
