In a joint operation, the authorities found more than fifty kilograms of the drug, with a local value in the millions, hidden in hydraulic oil in the city of Mackay, Queensland.
One Australian, thirty-eight years old, and two Colombians, thirty and forty-two years old, were detained and will face a total of twenty-six counts, including the import of a large amount of drugs for resale.
A third Colombian, twenty-four years old, was also arrested in Mackay and is under investigation.
In a simultaneous action, the Colombian police detained seven people in the city of Medellín, on charges of drug trafficking and criminal conspiracy.
At the same time, the Panamanian authorities detained three people in Panama City, on charges of drug trafficking, in an operation that began in September 2009.
The illegal drug trade is a global black market, dedicated to cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of those substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. Drug trafficking is the commercial exchange of drugs and drug paraphernalia. This includes any equipment used to manufacture illegal drugs or use them. In many countries, drug smuggling carries a severe penalty, including the death penalty. The countries of drug production have been seen as the worst affected by prohibition. In many countries worldwide, the illegal drug trade is thought to be directly linked to violent crimes such as murder and this is especially true in third world countries, but is also an issue for many developed countries worldwide.
