The Afghan National Security forces held its first joint-ministry graduation at the Ministry of Defense on January 18, 2011. The ceremony, which honored students from Defense and the Ministry of Interior, included two women.
“This is huge,” said Col. Mark Fassl, inspector general, NATO Training Mission–Afghanistan. “It shows that we are making great gains in promoting not only an accountable situation in the ministries, but the old ideas of how females should serve are being tossed aside and broken down.”
The monthlong course trained students to conduct criminal investigations and inspections.
“The course was challenging at first, but the importance of the training and the value of the position to the Afghan forces made it worthwhile,” said Lt. Maryary Haidary, pictured, after receiving the Inspector General pin from Gen. Shir Mohammad Karimi during the graduation ceremony.
