On May 11, Minister of National Defense Andrés Allamand presided at the closing ceremony of the PKO-Americas 2012 multinational peacekeeping exercise, held in Santiago, the Chilean capital.

Organized by the Chilean Joint General Staff and the U.S. Southern Command, PKO-Americas 2012 aimed to train personnel and standardize procedures and planning processes for a multinational force engaged in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions under a UN mandate.

Allamand participated in a crisis simulation, in which members of the Armed Forces of 15 countries in the Americas participated, in addition to European and Asian observers and UN representatives.

PKO-Americas 2012 began with battalion-level training held in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, from March 19 to 23. In the second phase, 65 officers and non-commissioned officers serving as squadron commanders, from 12 countries in the Americas, graduated from the Junior Leaders Training course held from April 2 to 6 at the Chilean Navy’s Fort Aguayo, which provided them with training and skills development in the basic content needed for deployment on peace missions. Meanwhile, in the third phase, the Chilean Joint Training Center for Peace Operations held the Senior Leader 2012 seminar, which brought together 31 representatives from 18 countries.
