French Soldiers prepare a medium-range interim tactical system unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for a reconnaissance mission over south Kapisa province, Afghanistan, at Tora camp, east of Kabul, in September 2011. UAVs are an important tool for a coalition of nine NATO countries that share surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence data.

As of April 2012, 3,400 French troops were based in Afghanistan supporting the NATO-led effort to battle Taliban rebels and to build up and train the Afghan forces. per Concordiam
